Things are going well for Yukino and Soichiro. They have accepted each other for who they are, and have truly become boyfriend and girlfriend. But they've been concentrating more on each other than on their schoolwork. When the two best students in school suddenly let their grades drop, it draws the attention and concern of one of the teachers. He wants Yukino and Soichiro to break up so they can concentrate on their schoolwork! He even calls a dreaded parent-teacher conference to tell their parents his concerns. Will they really make Yukino and Soichiro break up? Meanwhile, a girl named Maho is conspiring to get the school to hate Yukino because Maho is jealous. She suspects that Yukino's perfection is fake, and means to expose this to the school. Yukino finds herself without any friends, and pressure to break up with her best friend, Soichiro.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Girl's Manga - Romantic with a Comic Twist, 16 Mar 2004
As soon as I picked up the first volume of this manga I was hooked! Yukino Miyazawa is surely the kookiest most eccentric heroine ever! For those of us who like their characters 'flawed' she rules supreme in the world of shoujo (girl's manga). For Yukino hides her real character beneath the model student persona she has created for herself - or 'porcelain angel' as another character puts it! Only to her family does she reveal the real Miyazawa - hilariously ego-obsessed and devious in her pursuit of praise. Until that is, she meets Soichiro Arima who turns out to be her match in every sense of the word. For Soichiro swiftly sees through Yukino's masquerade to the kindred spirit beneath it. Together, hand-in-hand they vow to shed their deception and unleash their true selves on the unsuspecting world...

The story continues in Vol 3 as Soichiro and Yukino battle to keep their romance alive in a world of hostility! Emerging relucantly from love's young dream, they find they have well and truly lost their top spots in class, their exam results plummeting as their love soars! Called into the principal's office they must justify their actions to an unsympathetic Board! With their parents summoned to the school, can our newly-fledged couple maintain their composure in the face of such adversity? Not to give too much away, Yukino's mask slips a little more folks as she defends her corner! This book had my toes curling with glee. So romantic and endearing and so, so funny, this is truly how girl's manga should be.

Just how it manages to be so simultaneously humorous and yet also so sweetly touching is Kare Kano's great strength. I have heard this series criticised for the style of art the writer employs, but I think the fact it is so character and plot driven carries you through any 'sketchiness' in the visuals. There is much more beatifully drawn manga out there it's true, but I would say that a great deal of it is one-dimensional and 'empty' beneath the art, where Kare Kano has depth and subtlety by the bucket-load. There's a lot more than meets the eye in these books and I for one love the heady mix which can be both zany and crazy one minute and then thought-provoking and emotional the next. Alongside all the high-school capers you expect from this type of thing, there is very real and poignant emotion shining through which tugs relentlessly at the heartstrings. I know I will continue to collect this fantastic series to its conclusion.
