5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 27 Sep 2005
An excellent read if you enjoy psychological thrillers, and beautifully written. Despite a somewhat contrived climax, the story is good, the characters real and their interaction totally believable. This book keeps you guessing until almost the end, and the twists that emerge are really unexpected. The author also makes some cogent points outside the framework of the story that certainly make you think.
Thoroughly enjoyable, and for once here is a book that really does live up to its billing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Getting revenge, 20 May 2007

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Best Revenge (Paperback)
This is my second Stephen White book with his Alan Gregory character and it was as dreadful as the first one. The authors approach to adding `suspense' in order to create a thriller is to fill the pages with so much unimportant character development and environment information that you can't wait to get back to something that is interesting and relevant to the story.

This book mainly focuses on Alan being unsure about his interest and commitment to his profession, which isn't in the slightest way thrilling. Around this long-winded situational fluff is injected some scenes (quite a few irrelevant) about the story itself, and the main theme, revenge, gets a comparatively small number of pages. There are about eleven chapters out of the sixty-two: five at the beginning, and six about two-thirds through, which were interesting and thrilling.

The impression I have of these Alan Gregory books so far is that of a bumbling world of characters, Laurel and Hardy style without the comedy, which slide from one situation to the next without any real skill or intent. That for me kills the suspense and thrill. It's not gritting, and it's not real.

That said, this is a well-crafted book and not much is glaringly out of place. If it was condensed to about half it's length, it may even end up being a really good book.
