Product Description

Product Description

Build a django content management system, blog, and social networking site with James Bennett as he introduces the popular Django framework. You'll work through the development of each project, implementing and running the applications while learning new features along the way. Web frameworks are playing a major role in the creation of today's most compelling web applications, because they automate many of the tedious tasks, allowing developers to instead focus on providing users with creative and powerful features. Python developers have been particularly fortunate in this area, having been able to take advantage of Django, a very popular open source web framework whose stated goal is to "make it easier to build better web applications more quickly with less code." Practical Django Projects is the first book to introduce this popular framework by way of a series of real-world projects. What you'll learn Capitalize upon Django's well-defined framework architecture to build web applications faster than ever before. Learn by doing by working through the creation of three real-world projects, including a content management system, blog, and social networking site. Build user-friendly web sites with well-structured URLs, session tracking, and syndication options. Let Django handle tedious tasks such as database interaction while you focus on building compelling applications. Who is this book for? Web developers seeking to use the powerful Django framework to build powerful web sites. 2.0 out of 5 stars So near, yet so far, 6 Aug 2008

(REAL NAME)
This has potential to be a great book, but it was released too soon and just doesn't make the grade.

The tone makes it seem ideal for a beginner, with lots of explanation and friendly step-by-step walkthroughs, but it skips over a lot of things in a way that suggests the author expects the reader to be an experienced developer. In the opening chapters there are several places where I winced as I imagined the frustration a novice is going to feel when something really simple that isn't mentioned or explained stops them in their tracks.

In short, it seems focussed on two separate and incompatible audiences. It's written for beginners, but needs experience to make things work.

Unfortunately, there's also a fair amount of content in the book that's just wrong. It's factually incorrect. The book was written and published before Django v1.0 was released, and several pieces of code in there simply don't work with 1.0. It appears to be based around the 0.97ish release and there are a lot of differences between that and 1.0.

James Bennet clearly knows what he's talking about and has a good easy-to-read writing style, but the book seriously needs to be subbed by a decent technical editor and the content reviewed when Django 1.0 comes out.

This could turn out to be a fantastic introduction to a brilliant framework, but wait until the second edition. The first will give you more problems than it solves.
