Product Description

Product Description

Beginning PHP and MySQL: From Novice to Professional, Third Edition offers a comprehensive introduction to two of the most prominent open source technologies on the planet: the PHP scripting language and the MySQL database server. Updated to introduce the features found in MySQLs most significant release to date, readers learn how to take advantage of the latest features of both technologies to build powerful, manageable, and stable web applications. Essentially three books in one, readers not only profit from extensive introductions to the core features of each technology, but also learn how to effectively integrate the two in order to build robust data-driven applications. Packed with practical examples and insight into the real-world challenges faced by developers based on author W. Jason Gilmore's 7 years of expertise working with these technologies, readers will repeatedly return to this book as both a valuable instructional tool and reference guide.

4.0 out of 5 stars Agreed - not for beginners, 3 Mar 2006
By A Customer
I'm still a bit of a noob with PHP and I would have to agree with another reviewer that this is not a book for complete beginners. I feel it gets into too much detail too soon and is overwhelming for someone just starting out.

That said, such is the depth of coverage, I can see this becoming a fantastic 'bible' or reference book for those that have nailed the basics - which is why I still give it four stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book! Brilliant author., 27 Jan 2005
I knew absolutely nothing about php5 or php and now i find it easy. this book helped so much. from the start it thoroughly explains how to setup your computer for testing your code. the book then follows and gradually introduces the reader to more advanced details. i had bought a different php5 book but got completely lost and fustrated with it, i was nearly put off php5 but then after using this book php5 is a dream to work with.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not recommended to beginners!, 20 Nov 2005
By A Customer
I bought this book as i'm a student and had to set up my first dynamic web site using PHP and mySQL. I found this book really difficult to read and not good if you are a total beginner. I would recommend another book if you know nothing at all about web design and programming as some terms will be difficult to understand.
