Product Description

Product Description

Flash is one of the most engaging and innovative, and versatile technologies available—allowing the creation of pretty much anything from simple slideshows, animated banners and icons and cartoons, to Rich Internet Applications, Interactive videos, and dynamic user interfaces for web sites, kiosks, or DVDs. The possibilities are endless, except that now, it just got better. In 2007, Adobe released Flash CS3, which boasts a whole host of new features, including fully customizable workspace, full ActionScript 3.0 support, a PSD importer, a tween-to-code animation converter, and much more. And this book is all you'll need to learn Flash CS3 from the ground up, or learn about all these new features, if you already have previous Flash experience—Flash experts Tom Green and David Stiller take you step-by-step through all facets of Flash CS3, with the emphasis firmly on good design techniques that you use in your own projects. * Learn Flash design from the ground up, or just get to grips with the new features, with a series of step by step tutorials. * Provides an easy introduction to ActionScript 3.0 coding, but the focus is mainly kept on design. * Learn from the experts—written by renowned Flash designers Tom Green and David Stiller. What you’ll learn * The ins and outs of the Flash CS3 interface * How to use all of Flash CS3's essential features, such as text, graphics, and animation * How to use video and sound effectively in Flash * The basics of ActionScript 3.0 * Building Flash user interfaces rapidly using components. * How to populate a Flash movie with dynamic data such as XML. * The Basics of creating Flash Lite applications (Flash for mobile devices) * Using Cascading Style Sheets with Flash * Optimizing and publishing your Flash movies

2.0 out of 5 stars Glaring Errors Early On but gets better, 10 Dec 2008
By Steve Johnson "twrsj" (Skye, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The book is okay but a couple of warnings (head down to my overall comment if you dont want to read my moaning!):

1. Have a look at the amazon.com site and check the reviews for this book there! I didn't find these until after I experienced the following:

2. The book refers to accompanying files yet forgets to tell you where they are! Doesn't take too much to go to the either Friends of Ed website or the books' website itself - the files are there.

3. One of the first files downloaded opens and starts okay until you add a layer, book says layer 2, it's actually layer 5 most likely because they have tested it and deleted their added layers and just saved the file. Now as a Flash user this didn't bother me too much but to a new user, I am sure it would totally confuse them and there is nothing worse than a teaching book being wrong.

4. There begins to be some blase statements which could also confuse newbies. Egs: page 32, after detailed step by step instructions on setting a colour gradient, it then goes on to say "the gradient is rotated to fade in from transparent black to opaque black" - uh, how did you rotate it? Page 33/34 - drag 2 copies of the Trees symbol to the stage. The first thing you should notice is that one tree is in front of the other - um, only if you dragged one on top of the other, otherwise it is not noticeable unless you drag them over each other. You may think I'm being a bit picky but this is in Chapter 1, learning the interface and is unacceptable in my eyes. So I decide to check the errata on the websites.

5. The errata on the websites did not cover any of these (hilariously the FofE errata had only 1 errata which wasn't actually in the book!) so I found the raise an error on the Friends of Ed site for the book so I raised one. By page 38 I was on my 4th errata and was becoming a bit peeved. At this point I got fed up and happened upon the amazon.com reviews which raised most of the above points too! Published in 2007, you would have thought the files would have been corrected by now and some of the errata would have been addressed.

Overall:
Despite the problems encountered in the first chapter, I kept going with the book as it did seem to be a bit more involved than others and I did learn a fair bit and a few tips. I did seem to lose interest around Chapter 9 - 10 as the book seemed to wander and I felt the authors had lost interest by then too.

Would I recommend it, probably not.
