If you design Access databases you need to buy this book, 9 Feb 2004
I have read this book from cover to cover and, from my perspective of a self-taught programmer, find it hard to fault. For starters, technical books usually send me to sleep, but Garry's writing style is very engaging and easy to understand, so I just kept on reading. The book is also well illustrated with plenty of screen shots, so you don't have to be next to the computer to read it through first time. (It's that sort of book - after finding out about all the possibilities you'll want to go through it again to put selected parts into practice.) Although I've 'done' user-level security I was amazed at all the other aspects of protection and security I'd never even thought about... or was too scared to try in case I locked myself out of my own database! Garry covers everything in good detail, including how to thwart the password-crackers. On top of that he provides ample examples and tools (available as a small download) which you can then use in your databases (from Access 97 onwards). Some of the code offers additional ways of backing up your database design which is very handy. If that's not enough, each chapter offers further reading suggestions which you can view online, and so, one assumes, will always be up to date. The chapter on using Windows protected folders as part of your 'security package' was very informative, and helped me to understand how to set this up where two Windows XP books had failed! I think this is an excellent book and have no hesitation in recommending it to all Access developers.
