Product Description

Synopsis
ASP .NET plays a core role in the .NET architecture and strategy, including providing the underlying support for Web Services, and allows developers to exploit many of their current skills and experience, but gives them a brand new programming model to work with. It is streamlined, robust, flexible, and powerful - all of the things needed for real-world applications. "Moving to ASP .NET" provides focused and thorough guidance on creating Web applications using ASP .NET, including both Web Form applications and Web Services. Steve Harris and Rob Macdonald have worked extensively with .NET throughout the Beta program, and have gained real-world experience of creating and implementing ASP .NET applications. This book is targeted at current developers rather than novices, and assumes that readers will gain an understanding of companion technologies (such as VB .NET and ADO .NET) from other sources. However, appendices have been included that provide a brief review or introduction to each of these. "Moving to ASP .NET" provides in-depth discussion and examination of the topics that are of interest to current developers, and shows them how to make immediate use of ASP .NET.

Topics covered include Web Forms, server-side controls, mobile controls, data access and data binding, XML integration, .NET architecture and configuration, security, state and session management, designing for scalability, and Web Services. Extensive examples are shown throughout the book, and are also available via the Web for readers to access and download.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, 6 Jul 2002
I recently had the pleasure of being taught on a .NET training course by the two authors of this book. Their knowledge and understanding of the subject is of a very high quality and after buying this book I would not hesitate to recommend it to others who need an authoritative reference on ASP.NET.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book on ASP.NET, 8 Jul 2003
By Geoff (Worcester, Worcs United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I've read a lot of ASP.NET books and a lot of .NET books in general. Overall, most of them are not very good or at least lacking in some area. Moving to ASP.NET is the book that breaks the mold. This is the best .NET book I have come across. It looks at a comprehensive list of topics and tells you all you need to know. The style is very readable and although VB is in the title I would still recommend this to C# programmers (or any other .NET language) as the code fragments are small and easy to translate into C#. The value of this book is not in the code samples (although they are quite good) but in the explanations that cover how ASP.NET works from the lowest level (eg how the Page object is instantiated for every page request from a browser) to the highest level (eg how a Web Service works). This is a must read for new and intermediate ASP.NET programmers.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you buy one book this year...., 14 Oct 2002
Not only is this book technically the best on the subject but it's a really enjoyable read as well.

Other books have left so much out. Important stuff as well. I am writing my own ASP. net site at the moment and another book failed to mention that I needed to serialize my class to whack it in session state. I read the chapter in this book and I realise what a muppet I was right away!

There is an excellent part at the end where you can brush up on various related technologies so it really is a one stop shop.

Big thumbs up for me.
