5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Perl Tutorials and Solutuions, 17 Feb 2001
By david.crawford@iname.com (Kingston Upon Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This book covers almost every aspect of Perl from basic language syntax to cgi scripts. The only thing I would like to see added is coverage of the DBI database module. While the book does not cover every detail of Perl I think it does live up to its claim to be to be the only Perl book you will ever need. You would need to buy more than one O'Reilly title to cover the material in this book. At the moment I am happy to fill in any gaps in the book from the online documentation. The only other Perl book I think I might buy is Programming Perl by Larry Wall.

I enjoyed the structure and style of this book. Each chapter has a short technical overview followed by lots of practical examples, which is how I learn best. This and the chatty style kept me interested and I virtually read it from cover to cover.

I think this book will suit you if you: - Are new to Perl but have some programming experience. People who have not programmed before might find it skates over to many basics. - Like to learn by example; - Dislike long technical explanations; - Only want to buy one Perl book and - Are happy to fill in the details from on line documentation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable, 2 Mar 2006
By C. Nicholls (Herts, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
By far and away the best general-purpose Perl reference I have ever read. Well structured, comprehensive, succinct code examples and enough amusing interludes to let the technical content breathe (they also serve as an effective means of rephrasing the problem scenario).
I got my work to buy this book. When I left the company, I bought my own copy. It's that good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! Almost comprehensive., 15 Sep 2000
By A Customer
Started learning Perl from Perl and Cgi for the World Wide Web. Great but basic. The Perl Black Book is detailed. It is also amusing. The format is Deleting a Hash Element, What's the Difference between my and local? Accessing Arrays of Arrays. This makes finding what you need easy. Also makes the book easy to dip into. Covers almost everything!
