This was a page turner and it might even have been a candidate for a 5, but some sections and sentences are very badly written and confusing. The author makes leaps in logic or try to cram too much into a few sentences. I almost stopped reading it before I came to page 50, I'm glad I continued.

The story is very entertaining, and is very different from the preceding dark age clan novels. It is possible to read this book as a stand alone book.

This book follows the tales of several Vampires from several different clans. Andreas of egypt a follower of set (setite) has just delived Markus giovanni back to his clan mates in europe. (Markus was one of the main characters in dark ages Cappadocian)

He sets sail for the fallen city of constantinople there he makes a pact to carry 10 vampires to the safer lands of the west by Andreas requires payment from each of them not in money but in favours.
One of these vampires is Gregory the wondermaker whom is a craftsman of extreme talent whom was commionsed by a follower of set to make a item. Andreas wants this item and decides to use a heretic from the same bloodline as himself to befreind the wondermakers childe Zoe inorder to gain this item.

Every traveler seems to have there own plans and secerts which come out during the story. Keeping track of the characters can be hard as there are so many and you may find yourself like me flicking back and forth but by the middle you gain a grip of the main cast.

The book is filled with many differnt elements from fighting werewolves to escapeing to plotting and seduction spanning 4 years (remember it was slower to travel espcailly by land and with winters blocking roads) there is something to find in this book for all readers and for those who are intrested in the followers of set (setites) it shows some of there power and there skill with manpulation and a insight into there religon
