5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling and haunting novel, 2 Jan 2005
By A Customer
Bailey's new book is the story of three women in different eras, each of them compelling in their own way, though perhaps it is the story of Adelaide that the reader will be haunted by for a long, long time to come.

Written in a stylish manner, in a format that is very different to most books readily available on the market, this is something no reader of love stories would want to miss. I loved every word of it. Well done!

5.0 out of 5 stars Successful New Departure for Elizabeth Bailey, 25 Nov 2004
By A Customer
It seemed a little strange to find this book from Elizabeth Bailey, who is more well-known among fans for her Regency romances. I found this mystery to be an atmospheric page-turner that takes her work into a different sphere. I loved it myself (it reminded me that the Queen of Regency romance, Georgette Heyer, also wrote mysteries). It has an edgy, fast-paced style that kept me up reading half through the night.

The story unwinds itself in a filmic style - moving between time past and time present, pulling the curtain slightly further apart each time to reveal a little more of the intriguing story.

Anyone who has seen Nicole Kidman's film, BIRTH, recently, or who has an interest in the concept of more than one life, will find further interest in the story - I don't want to give anything away - so I won't go on.

Besides all this, it retains Elizabeth Bailey's ability to write a damn good romantic story, plunging you straight into the emotions of the lovers. And it is brilliantly written - vivid and immediate. I certainly recommend it, firstly as a great read and secondly as a book that gives you more than pause for thought

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for Reading Groups, 16 Oct 2005
There is so much in this book: an interesting literary style which changes for each of the three principal characters; three fascinating stories set in different times but brought together in a French chateau; love stories, a murder mystery, history and a host of supporting characters and sub plots. It is a great read that'll really get you thinking.
