5.0 out of 5 stars Navigation by Line of Position, 6 April 2003
By A Customer
"Line of Position Navigation" is a Must-Have for anyone interested in the history of modern celestial navigation techniques. The book gives a clear and simple description of the evolution of the Line of Position method that navigators still use today for finding their position on a chart from observation of the sun, moon or stars. Two absolutely unique features are: the reprint of the entire first edition of the 1843 book Captain Thomas H. Sumner wrote to describe his new method for finding a line upon which the ship's position rested and translations of two articles from the 1870's in which French Naval Capitaine Marcq Saint-Hilaire published his new technique for establishing position using the estimated altitude of the celestial body. The book is easy to read for the beginner yet technical enough to satisfy the most mathematically minded professional.
