3.0 out of 5 stars An Expensive Short Story, 11 Feb 2005
This review is from: Wendigo (Paperback)
The publishers have very sneakily taken what is admittedly a first-class spooky tale and marketed it as a novel. It isn't a novel. It's a short story. They've broken it into chapters, with plenty of blank pages either side, and even used a bigger typeface. Really, you've got to admire their cunning. Anyway, the story itself warrants 5 stars. It's like Predator meets the Blair Witch, kind of. But buy it in a collection of Blackwood's short stories like I should have done.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautifully written tale of supernatural terror, 17 Jan 2007
By T. Bobley "Tibley Bobley" (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This review is from: The Wendigo (Paperback)
Algernon Blackwood has taken the old Native American legend of the Wendigo and woven it into a thing of splendour and horror. Two Scottish gentlemen are guided through the Canadian forests in search of moose. But this autumn there are no moose to be found so they decide to split up and widen the search, with one party striking out east and the other west. The guide instructed to go east is extremely reluctant. There have been rumours that a terrible spirit of Indian legend was seen in the area he has been directed to search, only last autumn. His silly superstition is dismissed - and off they go, into the jaws of terror.

It would be impossible for me to give this book less than 5*s, despite the fact that the previous reviewer is quite right: it's available for a far more reasonable price (look for "Best Ghost Stories" here on amazon.co.uk, which includes this and 12 other Algernon Blackwood short stories) and, being out of copyright, can even be downloaded for nothing at one amazon.com-sponsored web site. It's the story and the quality of the writing I wish to recommend. No writer I know of writes like Algernon Blackwood. His style is simple and elegant. The words are carefully chosen to convey strong feelings and images. The sentences are quite short - not those long, convoluted, flowery sentences, packed with clauses, nested clauses, sub-clauses and the sort of stuff that seems designed to make you lose the thread. This is worth mentioning as it was quite a popular writing style in Blackwood's day (late 19th/early 20th century). His descriptions of wild places are particularly evocative and the reason that I'm happy to read stories like 'The Wendigo', 'The Willows' and 'The Camp of the Dog' over and over again.

If you enjoy ghost, horror or supernatural stories, I recommend you read this or any other tale by Algernon Blackwood. Look for the range of Algernon Blackwood books that are available from amazon before making your selection because the best buys include several stories for bargain prices.
