2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected., 11 Jan 2005
By igorthehunchback (The Earths Core) - See all my reviews
I have been doing Kickboxing for about 9 months now so I got this book in the hope of improving my technique and training.

Heres the problem with it. Its only 96 pages 13 Pages of introduction, 30 pages of punches and kicks 12 pages of training and sparing (of which 1/2 the training you need a partner 4 pages of nutrition and keeping a positive outlook, 18 pages of what to do in the ring and history of, 7 pages of street fighting, and the rest conclusion and index.

The second problem is some of kicks and punches are wrong. I know I'm not an expert, but I do know that your suppose to twist your foot when doing a roundhouse kick, that you hook using your legs and stomach not necessary your arm (you just keep your arm in a fixed postion) and so on.

The pictures themselves are also a bit misleading, they are very glossy and very high quality, but they show the begining and end of a move not what goes in between, i.e. where your feet should be before you make the move, and what you should be doing during the move.

This is not an essential art to mastering the art, its a beginners guide to show whats expected of you and what you will need to do before you start.

I found no new fighting techniques or training techniques.

If your a beginner and want to know what your letting yourself in for then this will be a very good book to start with.

However if you want a book that shows gives you training plans, different exercises using weights and body mass or what to do with problem areas (in me case my kicks are really bad) then this book is not for you.

This book will help you to no end if a) You are taking martial arts seriously, b) If you are relatively open minded.

Take a look at one of the other reviews, the guy says that there is a right and wrong way to throw a roundhouse kick. That statement is wrong. I have been doing Muay Thai for around three years, Boxing and Brazillian Jiu Jitsu for two years and Kali Stick and knife fighting for approx. a year and a half. now each dicipline has techniques that will work better in certain situations. That includes the same move, only to reach an alternative goal.

As with all techniques there is a "better way" to execute them in different situations. He will not learn from this book because he is not open minded in any way, shape or form.
