5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and sweet interracial romance, 1 Dec 2006
By C. Y. Davidson "Voraciousforbooks" (South London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Rock star Bryan Spencer needs some peace and quiet to deal with the death of his best friend. He ends up in a small town in Alabama, where he meets black bookstore owner Callie Lawson. Despite the fact that she is the total opposite of the hollywood bimbos he usually goes for, they become friends and then lovers. Can their relationship have a future when they have so little in common and they have to deal with their respective friends and families preconceptions and the media backlash caused by jealous aquaintainces.

I was up until nearly three this morning, because I couldn't put it down. I found it hard to believe this well written and very enjoyable book is the author's first novel. It's a witty, funny and sweet read, definitely one to reccommend to your friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!, 4 Jul 2008
I loved this book. It was funny, poignant romantic and most importantly; very well written. I couldn't put it down. I will buy her next book just because its got her name on it. Roslyn is a future romance superstar!

3.0 out of 5 stars A lesson in following your heart, not public opinion!, 18 May 2009
This book promised much and left me really fustrated because the lead female, Callie, was too boring and indecisive. I wanted to shake her out of her dreary existence and scream "get some excitment into your well ordered, predictable life!" I thought that the fact that Callie wore her hair in locs meant that she would be a non-conformist and be full of vitality as well as welcome excitment into her life. By the time I was halfway through the book, I realised that she was none of those things.

Bryan, the rock star, has the patience of a saint because he needed it to deal with the dull but nice homegirl that he was pursuing. I was thankful that Bryan patiently pursued his dream woman though because it made a great change from those stories where they are jumping into bed two minutes after meeting each other.

Halfway through the book, I came to the realisation that I did not like the lead woman because she was too straight-lace, too much of a Mummy's girl rather than the hard nose edged, independent and spirited business woman that I thought she was going to be and in my mind, miscast to be the love interest of a dysfunctional badboy rock star.

There were brief lapses to Callie's carefully constructed veneer of good ol' Southern girl when she was whisked away from her back water town and she revealed her more playful, sensual and little bit naughty side to Bryan but overall,, I found she focused too much on what others thought rather than followed her heart.

I found her sugary coated family to sweet for my taste but I did like her twin sisters who should have been used more to provide much needed subtle subversion into the cloying family unit.

In the end, love does win through but my goodness, it took time to get there and by the time it did, I really did not care because I disliked the female character so much!

One thing I did like the book for was the fact that it illustrated the silliness of choosing partners based on historical events rather than what is in your heart. For that alone, I would give five stars.
