4.0 out of 5 stars a light fun read..., 30 Oct 2003
By Jules (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Billy (Paperback)
This is a good little book, interesting and very funny in parts. It's full of Billyisms, which are a delight. It wasn't as insightfull as I was hoping for but it has plenty of heart and character. It deals with Billy's childhood with shocking honesty and charts his career through its many different forms. Pamela Stephenson style is light and easy to read and peppered with many anecdotes. The pictures in the book are a real treat; as Billy's stage dress sense was hilarious. The real treasure of is Billy's own Desiderata situated near the end and for that alone. it makes the book worth reading. Priceless.

2.0 out of 5 stars Tragic Tale Spoiled by Wife's Psychowaffle, 16 Jan 2008
By Famousdog (Montreal, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Billy (Paperback)
I'm glad I read this book thanks to the insight it provided into the terrible life history of somebody it is easy to dismiss as simply a clown. Unfortunately, I found the task of reading it increasingly frustrating thanks to the amateurish prose and frequent psychoanalytic asides from the author, Connelly's wife, Pamela Stephenson. Now, lets not split hairs, if Stephenson wasn't Billy's wife, this book wouldn't have made the cut, let alone the bestseller lists. Large margins and double-spacing help to pad out the meagre text and the writing style is confusing and muddled with frequent unsourced quotes. As a scientist (and a neuroscientist at that), I was increasingly frustrated and angered by Stephenson's psychoanalytic soapboxing. Throwaway Jungian remarks like "John's Oedipal angst" and comments about "one's shadow side" serve only to remind us that the author is awfully "clever" and a "clinical psychologist," since they shed no light on their subject that isn't already clearly illuminated by the recounting of their appalling childhood experiences. Psychoanalysis never actually told us anything interesting about the human mind that we didn't already know in less wordy and pretentious terms, but Stephenson is obviously too attached to her fallacious Freudian quackery to just give us the facts, ma'am. In short, I'm glad I read "Billy" - but didn't enjoy the experience one iota!
