3.0 out of 5 stars Good in parts, 21 Feb 2008
By patashnik (London, England) - See all my reviews
This book works well as a portrait of a Romania on the verge of becoming part of the EU and, in the view of the writer, about to change forever, and not really for the better. He feels it will become homogenised, Americanised and tainted by global blandness. A country which sits on the edge of Europe, he captures Bucharest and the Romanian countryside really well indeed, and his exploration of the Romanian national identity is interesting. His description of his aging, ailing mother is done well and movingly. Where the book is rather less successful for me is in the description of his relationship with Romulus, the young hustler who he meets first in Budapest. He eventually 'falls in love' with him, though the feeling is not requited, but this relationship comes across as just another middle-aged man having a mid-life crisis who is besotted with a bit of rough trade.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great name for a great writer, 8 May 2006
This is a brilliantly atmospheric, honest story of the difficulties and delights of true love. It also made me want to go to Eastern Europe immediately. Beautiful looking book too and nice and long so you can get properly lost in it.

4.0 out of 5 stars a driven relationship, a disturbing read, 4 Feb 2009
By sussex mark (Sussex, UK) - See all my reviews
An extraordinary book, one that will remain in the mind. Its author is an intellectual who is feted in Paris and New York and yet who is trapped in what Simon Callow has accurately described as an 'amour fou' with a Romanian hustler. Maybe trapped is the wrong word. He enters into the obsessive relationship willingly. Indeed he proclaims it to his other world, a sort of second 'coming out' and not always with happy results. He doesn't shield us from painful insights into his own shortcomings. We may curse him for his own stupidity and yet he isn't stupid, he's capable of clear analysis of what is going on. He draws parallels with Romanian history, he takes us on a journey through Eastern Europe and he provides a snapshot of a society in transition from dour Communism to harsh capitalism.

The quality of the prose in this book varies so wildly it might have been written by a committee. Some sections contain strings of metaphors so forced they would shame a school... Read more
