4.0 out of 5 stars Bittersweet Comedy, 26 Jul 2005

(TOP 10 REVIEWER)
Ms. Diller provides plenty of laughs and food for thought in this brash, few-holds-barred autobiography nicely polished by Richard Buskin's prose. From the title to the stories, Ms. Diller grabs your heart and your funny bone as she recounts her long struggles to make it as a stand-up comedienne and survive the men in her life. The book is also filled with the unexpected tales of Ms. Diller's career as a pianist, nude model for Playboy and heart-breaking moments as a mother.

If you ever caught her routine, you probably remember something about "Fang" . . . her reference to the fictional man in her life. While the portrait of Fang was far from appealing, it was close enough to the truth about her first husband that he proudly liked to claim that he was Fang.

In the days before working women were the ideal and feminism was a new outlook, Ms. Diller struggled to put herself in charge of her own life and to develop her talent. The story is hardly rags-to-riches . . . but it's certainly homeless-to-earning-a-living.

The best parts of the book are where she reveals the art behind her humor . . . especially its psychology, playing off her appearance and our assumptions about her . . . and examples of the humor are suspended like a helium balloon above stories about the pain in her marriage.

Most autobiographies and biographies of comics fall flat. This is the best one I remember reading. Pick it up . . . you won't get hurt . . . unless you try to use it as a toothbrush!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable read, 11 Jun 2009
By Suze "Susie" (England) - See all my reviews

I only wish we had been able to watch Phyllis in action on tv here in the UK. She is legendary but there are very few clips of her on YouTube for us to see. That laugh of hers is infectious and no wonder she became so successful and well thought of by her peers and fans alike.
Her humour and intelligence and her willingness to work hard to succeed shine through here. Weighed down by an idle husband and a load of kids [two of whom have pre-deceased her] she just kept on going. Even when times were really tough, she was never negative. Always laughing and always believing her dreams would come to fruition.
What a character. She knew she wasn't a beauty, so she emphasised her crazy hair by having fantastic wigs made and she pokes fun at her looks in a really warm and funny way. She tells us about her family and her rise to fame in the same warm and funny manner. A wonderful lady - still alive as I type this in June 2009 - she's 92 - and probably still wisecracking all day.
I loved this book and if I knew Phyllis personally I think I would love her too. She comes over as a lovely, clever, hard working and very funny woman.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the read, 5 Oct 2008

(REAL NAME)
I just want to agree with the previous reviewer who said all that needs to be said about this book. Whether you've heard of Diller or not, or are a fan, it's a great read, very funny [side-splitting in parts] and enough pathos to make Diller human to the reader. A tough life, and a tough lady who knew how to make the audience convulse with laughter.
Great holiday read:)
