Product Description

Book Description
The ten lessons in this tutorial introduce users to Pro/ENGINEER's design capabilities.

From the Author
Effective, classroom-tested Pro/E training material
This book was written to introduce new users to Pro/Engineer, and take them to an intermediate skill level. I have tried to write the book I wish I had when first learning Pro/E! The material covered includes basic part design, assemblies, and creation of detailed engineering drawings. Completion of all lessons in the Tutorial requires about 40 hours. The Tutorial has been updated twice for new Releases of Pro/Engineer.

I have been using the Tutorial for three years, with excellent results, in a mechanical engineering design graphics course. Since my class size is typically 120 to 130 students of diverse backgrounds (in terms of CAD experience), I needed a book that would be able to stand alone and allow students to learn the basic elements of Pro/E at their own pace. A large portion of the Pro/E training in the course occurs outside regularly scheduled computer lab time, so I wanted the book to be complete and accurate in its description of Pro/E commands. At the same time, I wanted the book to be able to answer most student questions, allowing them to proceed with a minimum of instructor assistance.

In the book, I try to balance breadth of coverage of basic Pro/E functions, and depth of understanding of the modeling philosophy inherent in a feature-based, parametric modeler. Thus, students must do more than blindly execute command sequences (although these are given in full detail in the Tutorial), but must also spend some time thinking about what they are doing. To reinforce this, numerous exercises are scattered about the book which require the student to explore the Pro/E models they create to discover the "why's" as well as the "how's" of successful modeling. Most importantly, they are introduced to the Pro/E tools necessary to recover from modeling mistakes and errors.

Several students have landed summer jobs based on their knowledge of Pro/E after taking this course. Many more students are using Pro/E in subsequent design courses in our program and for student design competitions.

Comments from users have been positive and the success of this Tutorial has been gratifying. I am particularly pleased that the book has been adopted at so many other schools. Nonetheless, improvements are possible and I am always open to suggestions for improving the book. I look forward to its continued development. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to Pro/Engineer, 19 Jan 1999
By A Customer
I am a Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of New Hampshire. I used this book to introduce a Freshman level design course to the use of Pro/Engineer. I had looked at most of the other Pro/Engineer books offerred by Amazon and selected this one based on its thoughtful step-by-step approach. The reaction from the 52 students in the class was extremely positive and they were able to progress through the ten lessons at the rate of about one per week.

Because the author, Toogood, has experience in teaching this material to his own students he correctly anticipates where they are likely to be confused or make mistakes. The text is very good at anticipating these pitfalls and explaining how to avoid them.

I also used the text as the basis for a "short course" taught to upper level undergraduates. We were able to progress through the material at the rate of two lessons per day, making the ten lessons fit nicely into a one week course.

Overall, this is an excellent introduction to a powerful CAD package and I recommend it highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellant Introduction to Pro/Engineer, 6 Mar 2001
By A Customer
I was an Engineering student in a University in England, and i had great difficulty in understanding the Pro Engineer Lecturer, this was until i bought the book written by Mr Roger Toogood and Jack Zecher. The book provides an excellant introduction to the basic learning of Pro Engineer, i have other Pro Engineer books, which are very difficult to follow and speak an alien language. The techniques illustrated are easy to follow and provide a step by step build up. For this module in my course i got a 'B', which suprised me. This book should be part of all Engineering students resource pack.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent tutorial, which is easy to understand, 16 Mar 2003

Pro/E was the system I used at University and the very first 3D Solid Modeller exposed to. At first Pro/E was confusing to pick up as the lecturer was not able to explain the logic of the commands.
Thankfully, I found this book. The author manages to explain clearly how to start modelling, creating assembly and engineering drawing.
The text is writing very well, clearly and with plenty of graphical step-by-step instructions. The author introduces the student to new features initially, once the student manages to finish the initial tutorial, there are plenty of test models the student is encouraged to do.

After reading this book and using it as a tutorial, I was confident in modelling with Pro/E. This is the very best Pro/E tutorial I have ever used. SDC publications tend to publish the best tutorials - try other titles within the SDC range.
