Absolutely gorgeous book for francophiles, 17 Dec 2007
I was lucky enough to buy this book in a remainder shop years ago, and so seeing it now priced at £32 I feel quite smug!!
I collect books on French food and cookery, and this is one of my top favourites. It deals with the subject in the obvious way, ie by region/area, but you get some less well-covered ones as well, such as the Sologne, Anjou and Touraine.
Everybody keen France will slaver over this book, even if the cookery part is not really your thing. There are recipes - each of the 12 areas covered has 6 or 8 - covering the regional delicacies and typical dishes, but most of the book talks about the regions themselves, mouthwateringly photographed and evocatively written. If there is a fault, it is maybe that it is a bit TOO glossy, but don't be put off - it's gorgeous!
The photos are by Robert Freson, and contributing authors are such names as Arabella Boxer, Caroline Conran, and Anne Willan. Areas covered: Normandy & Brittany, Anjou & Touraine, Ile de France, Sologne, Alsace, Burgundy, Lyonnais, Provence, Languedoc, Pays Basque, Bordelais, and Perigord.
Go on, treat ypurself - you'll be poring over it with pleasure for years to come!

Sublime gastroporn, 11 Aug 2000
By A Customer
"Gastroporn" = cookery books that you read in bed. In this instance, that's no insult. This is easily the best of the genre. First published as a pull-out series in the UK's Sunday Times colour supplement, then in this lavish book edition. Superb photographs of French traditional regional dishes, with recipes (though you wouldn't want to risk staining the glossy pages in the kitchen).
