SVG is in itself really easy to learn if you have the slightest idea of what XML is. You basically do not need a book, but it is handy to have a refererence. I bought this book to learn more of its capabilities, but was disappointed. The book is full of examples, many of which are just small variations. Each example is basically written twice - first in its entirety and then by dissection. In spite of the variations you can rarely extrapolate to code that you need. You basically learn how to make the same images as the author did. Hard words, but I recently bought 'SVG Unleashed' and I see no reason to recommend Fundamentals of SVG programming when compared to SVG Unleashed.
