'Create an FPS with DirectX 8.0!' it says on the cover. I'd love to, but not with the help of this lightweight pamphlet.About three-quarters of the way through it tells you how to install the DX8 SDK. What does it tell you before this point? How to use a load of freeware and evaluation copies of popular media tools, that's what. Yes, I know 'MilkShape' is an excellent tool, and if I need to know how to use it I'll use the help files, or any one of thousands of [very good] web sites and on-line tutorials on the subject. The same goes for PSP7, ACID, Cool Edit and all the other stuff bunged on the CD. The final insult is that this book tells you nothing, yes NOTHING, about DX8 programming. Instead, it gives you some very poor examples (better stuff also available on the web) of how to use a freeware 3D engine! The excuse is that writing your own would be very hard and would take a long time.... errrm, that's why I bought a book on the subject. And did I mention that all of the examples are written in that most favourite of high speed, real-time game programming languages - Visual Basic. Oh, please! You can not make a book out of a bunch of collected downloads off the internet. The book should be titled 'How To Write a 3D Demo Using VB'. How do I return this rubbish? Buy the Walsh 'Zen of Direct3D Game Programming' book instead, then search the web for '3D maths'. It worked for me.
