2.0 out of 5 stars An interesting but rather dated book., 15 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This book was to me rather dissapointing by the fact it's supposedly brand new and bang up to date it seems to have been written back in the 80's with a little updating. A hint of photoshop was brushed off in favour of brush re-touching.
The book though is fairly interesting and wide in it's scope.
Mainly designed for an american audience with the stereotypical cheesy shots americans seem to like so much.
If thats the market you are aiming for then give it a go. It has all the information you would need to get off to a flying start with even a special section on making our uglier cousins appear normal.
Definately one for the car boot sale.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, 7 Jul 2008
If you don't yet know the techniques or equipment to use (and what rules to follow) in order to create great portraits then this book is great for you.

It has the general principlals of portraiture (posing, composition, and exposure, lighting ratios and variations, metering and depth of field)and the details all clearly explained.
It will get you off to a very good start and serve you well into the future.
Worth buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Look no further, this covers everything you need., 18 May 2009
If you only buy one book on portrait photography, make it this one. It is an easy read, packed full of useful advice and ideas. Posing, lighting, equipment, achieving spontaneity, corrective techniques (flattering camera angles for facial flaws), retouching and printing are covered, yet it remains concise. There are plenty of examples, with full explanations of how the results were achieved. Well worth the money.
