Product Description

Review

This book is invaluably empowering both for parents and for clinicians working with those suffering from eating disturbance. Moreover, it has the remarkable merit of pleasurable reading, precise wording, and clinical wisdom.Cecile Rausch Herscovici, Universidad del Salvador, Buenos Aires, Argentina, from the newsletter of the European council for Eating Disorders

This book fills a gap in the books available on eating disorders in that it addresses a wide range of potential eating disorders in young people... This is a reassuring book without negating the seriousness of an eating disorder and is written as though sharing knowledge with equal partners in the process of helping a child - Signpost, March 2005

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for any parent whose child has an Eating Disorder., 6 Aug 2001
This book is a must for any Parent whose child has an eating disorder. It is also a valuable resource for paediatric nurses and other health professionals who work with this client group. Clearly written, it covers the broad spectrum of eating disorders from Anorexia Nervosa to Bulimia.

The Chapters are clearly laid out and the book can be used as a resource to dip in and out of but i would agree with the authors that it is best to sit down and read it in order and then dip in and out as needed. It is very easy to read, containing little medical jargon and can be read in a couple of days.

Descriptions of each disorder are given along with an overview of predisposing and precipitating factors. But the most helpful chapters are those that deal with coping on a day to day basis. They offer strategies that parents and health care professionals can use to help maintain their own sanity and help these youngsters ensuring consistency of approach.

At the end is a list of useful addresses where parents can seek further help and support. The book is non-judgemental and offers parents a message of hope, that though the journey is long and hard there is light at the end of the tunnel.

5.0 out of 5 stars I wish it was available more easily in North America, 16 Nov 2001
By A Customer
This book is a beautifully written description of eating disorders and their treatment and of how the sufferers feel. It is reassuring to parents and explains these "incomprehensible" disorders. Each disorder is described with descritions of individuals, contributing disorders for the disorder and best of all, ways to help/cope. As a physicican treating patients I have found it extremely useful for families - in reassuring them also and giving them hope and understanding in what can be a difficult process. My favourite book to recommend. My main complaint is that I have to come to the British web site to get more copies as they do not always come back!
