First a big warning - this book was written when Visual Basic version 4 was the latest edition and before the concepts of classes had entered the VB language. Also the Java is very dated and you will get lots of complaints from an up-to-date Java SDK compiler. The companion CD is no longer available so you will have to download a Java SDK from Sun and enter all of the code examples that interest you via the keyboard.

Having said that the code examples work and overall this is quite an approachable book. It will not make you an expert on Java but it does afford a good introduction to the basics of the syntax and quickly gets you creating new applets and Windows programs. If you are just looking for a taste of Java and you come from a Visual Basic background this could be the right book for you. If you are making a serious attempt to learn the language then I would start elsewhere.
