Fantastic comparison. Ideal for a COBOL progammer quick-start. By far the best COBOL/Java book out there. I've read several others. This is not light-weight like some, but thorough, well and interestingly written and full of all the stuff you need to know. I'm a java programmer who works for a company specialising in COBOL to Java migrations - it covers all the stuff you need to know that other java books take for granted -topics that are alien to COBOL programmers - like scope, visibility, accessibility, overloading, inheritance, casts - plus handy tips like common errors and misunderstandings. It also goes much further than just COBOL - including SQL, threads, and so on.

It refreshed my understanding of both languages by providing timely comparisons in both directions. It can also serve as a useful reference.

The tricky bit is knowing where to stop and what level to pitch at - this book gets it just right for the serious developer.
