Review
"A thoroughly engaging and informative book about the decision to become a single mother." --Cynthia Nixon, Emmy award-winning actress, "Sex and the City" "The perfect book for any woman considering single motherhood...You'll feel like you've entered the most amazing support group without ever leaving your home." --Liz Tucillo, coauthor of "He's Just Not That Into You" aI knocked myself up 7 years ago-and it's the best thing I ever did. "Knock Yourself Up" is a rare find-a serious guidebook that's also a great read." --Camryn Manheim, Emmy-award winning actress "Title aside, this book is a sober, honest look at the real women who face the decision about whether to have a child before they've been able to find a partner. Anyone who thinks women take this decision lightly, or don't consider men important, should read this for a closer look." --Mikki Morrissette, author of "Choosing Single Motherhood" "This is the right book oat the right time. Knock Yourself Up has terrific ideas and encouragement for all kinds of mothers. --Pepper Schwartz, Ph.D., author of "Prime: Adventures and Advice on Sex, Love, and the Sensual Years" "A laugh-out-loud, funny, fresh, and fabulous debut!" --Susan Shapiro, author of "Five Men Who Broke My Heart"

Synopsis
More and more women are choosing not to let being single stand in the way of becoming a mum. In this honest and, often hilarious, guide, Louise Sloan shares the details of her own funny and heartbreaking journey to single motherhood - including cyberstalking an anonymous sperm donor, dealing with exploding semen vials and being mistaken for a horse breeder - as well as the experiences of many other women. "Knock Yourself Up" offers an inside look at the logistical and legal processes of opting for single motherhood, drawing on the personal stories of women who have done it. Addressing a range of topics such as coping with loneliness, financial struggles, complex reactions of family members and more, "Knock Yourself Up" covers the emotional and practical issues and provides the kind of intimate answers you won't find anywhere else to questions like: When is the right time to decide to have a baby alone? How do I choose the right sperm? Is this fair to the kid? How do I tell my parents? How do I tell my dates? What's it like to be pregnant on your own? If I do this, will I ever have sex - or a life - again?Informative and entertaining, "Knock Yourself Up" is a fun-to-read, up-to-date guide for any woman who is considering taking the baby plunge, with inspiring stories from women who have created happy families on their own.

4.0 out of 5 stars A thorough, practical and down to earth guide, 3 Dec 2007
By Emily (london uk) - See all my reviews
This book is a valuable addition in a sparse field. Once you've got past the silly title, it consists mainly of first-person acounts of the journey the many contributors have taken to create and raise a family without a male partner, in the usual candid and upbeat style we expect from the USA, but also very honest about the difficulties and pain that can be involved. It is thorough and thought provoking, and often presents different approaches to give a balanced and pragmatic overview. It makes no attempt to convert anyone, so I wouldn't expect praise from anyone who did not genuinely want to benefit from it's contents.
All we need now is a UK edition with the local variants / references for women here who are chosing motherhood outside the usual model.

4.0 out of 5 stars It got better!, 13 Feb 2009
By bingbong (England) - See all my reviews
I read this book after reading the Jane Mattes Single Mothers by Choice book, which I really enjoyed.
This book is different as the author has talked to lots of single mothers and uses their stories, as well as her own, to give the reader an idea about single motherhood.
At first I really didn't like it, and nearly gave up, but I am pleased that I didn't as I ended up really enjoying the book and it gave me a lot to think about. I didn't always like the authors style and comments, but in general I found this book well worth reading.
Just a shame that all of these books are by American's, where things work so differenly from the UK.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most readable book on the subject, 9 Sep 2008
By L. Hunter (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Chatty, informal and anecdotal in content I found this book to be the most readable I found on the subject and digested it cover to cover. I found that it didn't preach or teach but did make me think. I would recommend to anyone planning to be a single mother as the 'first' book to read as I think it is the most accessable.
