Good learning tool for the beginner, but too much "deja-vu" for the RPG III programmer. Errors in the text of her RPG/400 book are still present in this one: Specification of AND/OR SELECT/OMIT lines in Logical File DDS, and erroneous from/to locations for user ID in Program Status Data Structure.

I am recommending this book for my trainees. It is a good all-round textbook providing a tutorial for learning the language, as well as a comprehensive reference section. This is what I like

* The assignments
* DDS coding
* The text boxes that make links to legacy coding.

However, it doesn't cover the following in much depth.

* Logic cycle programming
* Commitment control
* Associated CL programming

Moreover, it is quite dated - it still reckons that V5R2 is the state of the art when most companies are using V5R4 or even V6R1. May the authors please publish an updated version.

Nevertheless, it is the best RPG book so far.
