From the Author

Learn how to publish your own work!
Tom and I originally wrote and self-published "The Complete Guide to Self-Publishing" back in 1979. Then it was titled "The Encyclopedia of Self-Publishing."

We did what we recommend our readers and clients do: make a success of the book, then sell the rights to a major publisher. It was very exciting when we went to Cincinnati in 1983 to negotiate with Writers Digest Books their taking over this title. Little did we know, they had amassed some 30 books on the subject of self-publishing. (We had no idea there were that many back then!) They wanted to choose the very best on the topic ...and decided our book was it. What particularly delighted us was that a trade publisher was finally going to produce a book on self-publishing, thus helping legitimize this method for getting into print.

Since then, the book has been revised and is now in a third edition. In this recent edition we added several things. It now includes 30 ways to generate working capital, information about publishing and marketing into Canada, and details about working with a master (exclusive) distributor. We were most pleased when, on August 19, 1997, a reporter on NPR's Marketplace program declared, "The bible of this self-publishing craze is The Complete Guide to Self-Publishing."

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent but needs updating, 26 Dec 1998
By A Customer
No other book provides the scope and depth of coverage of this book. However, the edition I read was dated 1994, and was probably written a year earlier. Many of the references are out of date, or incomplete in that they do not provide current e-mail or website addresses -- if at all. Nor does the book take into account fully enough the revolution in the internet that has taken place since the pub. date. The Rosses owe their many admirers an update.

2.0 out of 5 stars annoying American-style tome, 1 Jun 2007
By Michael Eleftheriou - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this book so I could see how to go about publishing my translations, not to 'seize control of my destiny'.
This book is 80% filler of the TV-marketing variety.
Buy it by all means if you want to sift 2 grains of useful information per self-help, go-get-it, sell-sell-sell, treat-everyone-you-meet-as-a-potential-buyer, Yanky doodle tonne.
Otherwise, look elsewhere.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but outdated., 28 Nov 1998
By A Customer
This book is loaded with useful information, some of which can't be found elsewhere. Unfortunately, the pub date is 1994, which probably means it was written in 1993. Few people had even heard of the internet at that time, and the Ross's references to it are slight and incomplete. The internet revolution has completely transformed the self-publishing landscape -- this book even lacks up-to-date online addresses, etc. Frankly, I was distressed when I realized how far behind the times this volume really is. The Rosses "owe" the world a completely revised edition, dealing with the publishing universe as it now is. Otherwise, this book should come with a warning: "Terrific, but out of date."
