I read this book from cover to cover several time before commiting myself to a Ridgeback pup, now my pup is 15 months old I can confirm that this was like a bible to me, I have a well behaved dog and nothing I have read in this book has been wrong, I prepared me as to what to expect so I got no unpleasant surprises. A well written book with sound advice.

I bought this book about a month ago to prepare for the arrival of my very own little bundle of 'Rhodie' joy and it helped fill me in on the finer details of the breed's history and the uniqe qualities of these magnificent, big hearted animals.

Of course I had already decided long before then (3 years before!) that a Ridgeback was right for me but if you need convincing then this book might just do the job. The advice is helpful and easy to read and it is obvious that the author has had plenty of experience of the humour and magic a Ridgeback can bring to your life. The pictures are gorgeous!

A lot of breed books contain the same generic info about preparing for the arrival of a new dog or pup, but a Rhodesian Ridgeback is no ordinary dog and this is reflected in the informal writing which contains a lot of little stories of the author's own RRs which add a nice touch. There are also some training tips from Ian Dunbar (who's book "Before and After Getting Your Puppy" is also worth getting) that promote a reward based training regime, which of course is the most effective with any dog never mind a Ridgeback. The last section of the book is non-breed specific and has some tips about fitness and health that is quite handy - you'll find Ridgebacks don't really have a specific exercise plan as they are just as happy whether they are lazing beside you in bed or running all day long. All in all I could not be happier with the book and I'm more than delighted with my pup, she is the most gentle and affectionate little (well, not so little) dog I have ever encountered - a perfect example of the spirit of these special dogs :)
