Product Description

Product Description

Focusing on the dilemmas of contemporary women and issues of responsibility and choice, Clare Boylan's writing has become a much-loved voice of contemporary fiction. Here, published in a single volume for the first time, are all three of her collections: A NAIL ON THE HEAD, CONCERNING VIRGINS and THAT BAD WOMAN. The stories are bewitching as they unsettle, confirming Clare Boylan's ability to subvert our reactions with irony as subtle and deft as a surgeon's blade. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compressed gems of delight, 16 Sep 2009
By E. Shaw "Kokoschka's_cat" (Leeds, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is an accomplished collection of 38 stories by a versatile and entertaining writer - mostly very enjoyable, though some are fairly slight. The best ones are quite dark - The Wronged Wife for instance, where a woman meets her husband's first wife and slowly begins to realise that all the irritations she had thought were caused by his first marriage to an impossible woman stem only from his own rather nasty nature.

Clare Boylan quite likes a moral in the tale, but she is usually skilled enough to mask it or otherwise subvert her own tendency. There is lots of variety and skill in the writing, but sometimes there is a sameness in the dilemma and this can pall at times, especially when it is at its breeziest.

Nevertheless, these are impressive short stories. A wicked sense of humour pervades these pages and I like her best in her short story persona - she has the length down to its optimum and she plunges straight in with a scenario that one grasps immediately. She is particularly good at getting inside a child's mind and, if some of these pieces are a trifle workmanlike, the majority are compressed gems of delight.
