5.0 out of 5 stars FAAAAANNNNTASTIC, 8 Mar 2002
By lcarvalh@gio.com.au (Melbourne, Australia) - See all my reviews
So you love JMS's stuff but aren't a comic book fan?? Well neither am I (after this I'll consider converting though). This goes beyond any of my expectations. (well actually no it doesn't because I know JMS is a fantastic writer). The story line is great - i won't give it away. It's kinda dark & ominous, totally suspenseful. It's a story of 113 kids with unusual skills, told mainly by one of the characters, but each one has a tale to tell. The drawings are fantastic, I lack the words to describe. I have read the pages (& am still reading them) & looked at the pictures in minute detail - there is sooo much to see. don't hesitate to buy this.

5.0 out of 5 stars It will blow you away!, 11 Jul 2001
By A Customer
The story is incredible, its a new twist on what different people would do with the powers they were given. There is a town where, when a comet of sorts hits, all children in utero are endowed with varying powers. There are 113 in all. So many things are covered, such as the reactions of the parents of these children, the government's way of dealing with them, and the "specials" relations with each other. The plot is well planned out and will end with the 24th issue, meaning that there are 2 more trades to follow this one. One word of advice, do not flip through the book, read it page by page so you can enjoy all the suspense and mystery. The art is incredible as well, so what are you waiting for? One of my all time favorites. Any comic book fan or any fan of Babylon 5 will enjoy this book. It is also great if you have friends that you want to get into comic books.

5.0 out of 5 stars JMS does for comics what he did for TV with Babylon 5, 21 April 2001
This is first creator owned comics work from J Michael Straczynski. With Babylon 5 jms took an oft used idea and made it special by making us care about the people and then following a situation to its logical, and often tragic, conclusion. Rising Stars tells the stories of a group of 113 people who were in utero at the same time in the same town who develop powers. The story starts with the murder of a "special" but it takes a special to kill a special. Born in Fire is the first arc of the series and tells of the search for the murderer and the consequences of finding the truth. Rising Stars has been compared to Alan Moore's Watchmen, in Amazon's opinion the best graphic novel. It lives up to the expectation. "Things Fall Apart" the final story in volume 1 is about as good as comics get. For anyone with an interest in comics or B5 this is a must read.
