5.0 out of 5 stars The Two of us .... and the reader, 15 April 2005
By Enda (Dublin, Ireland) - See all my reviews
I had heard people say good things about this book and after reading it myself, I can only confirm that
everything I was told is true and a whole lot more. This is the story of a life of adventure, fun, happiness, sadness and more than anything else, Love. Sheila Hancock comes across as a most truthful and honest narrator and exposes warts and all. We are brought on a roller coaster ride from the very beginning of both lives and the story is told in a most ingenious way. The Narrator starts off in the very recent past before John became ill, but only for one paragraph and then we are transported back to the past. And this is the style the whole way through the book. And it works fantastically well as both past and present hold you spellbound wanting more of both, and at the same time. I have never experienced this with a book before. The book describes John Thaw's humble beginnings and reveals a torch he was to painfully carry through his life. Not only that we can only marvel that these two people who were made for each other eventually meeting and through good times and bad times learning to love each other more and more.

It is a very uplifting book and Sheila Hancock whether she likes it or not, comes across as a very beautiful gutsy Lady. I have no doubt that she was the best thing that ever happened in John Thaw's life and vice versa. As we move from the past back into the present we can see and almost tangibly feel the torment that she went through at her time of loss. She reproduces some poems which some kind people gave to her and which helped her in her deep sadness. Yes, this book will appeal to anybody who has ever loved, lost, laughed or cried, all types, happy or sad because despite having just entered into her 70th year she comes across as being much younger (and still quite a looker) and having a great sense of fun. And finally there are some beautiful family photographs which with everything else will leave the reader with the grateful feeling that they have been allowed to share in two beautiful lives. Brilliant!!
