5.0 out of 5 stars witty and delightful, 8 May 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Of Cats and Kings (Hardcover)
...This book is extremely funny while also addressing the very serious concerns that face any intelligent traveller in Burma. The author has a unique turn of phrase ('I always fantasise about being a hiker. Oooh let's hike here and trek there, trekky trekky trek trek, but actually I hate it' - made me laugh and laugh)and a self-deprecating take on life that contrasts (to brilliant effect) with the culture she encounters...

5.0 out of 5 stars Really enjoyable & highly recommended....., 7 April 2003
By S. Bennett "kadzi88" - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Of Cats and Kings (Hardcover)
.... I read this and "I & Claudius" whilst waiting for my own Tonlinese kitten to be ready to leave his mother and come and live with us. My Mum had read both first and warned me that "Of Cats & Kings" was not as good as "I & Claudius", I disagree, I enjoyed this book as much, if not more than the first.

The history and politics of Burma was facinating without being too in-depth, I was interested in the "travel" aspect as my beloved late Granddad spent time in Burma & I will admit that I read this book for the cats but found myself drawn into the descriptions of Burmese life, Clare writes very well and the book is funny and warm as well as being very sad in places.

People who read this book expecting it to be a detailed travelogue will be disappointed, (like the reviewer below) but if that's what you expect it to be you are completely missing the point. Yes, you do learn about the countries Clare visits, but it's more importantly a young womans exploration of herself and why she is attached to cats above all other living things.

I loved it, and keep wishing I hadn't finished it so I could tuck myself away and read some more!!

Oh, yes and I called my kitten Claudius!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring & predictable, 29 April 2002
This review is from: Of Cats and Kings (Hardcover)
The author tries to combine travelogue with humour plus the inevitable dig at the Burmese (Myanmar) Government. It has all been done before by others far more skilled than Ms de Vries; in particular, the author's attempts to reproduce the Burmese peoples' efforts at speaking English are as unfunny as they are offensive. The inevitable result - a boring and predictable tome.
