4.0 out of 5 stars HUGE selection of ideas - productive if used judiciously., 17 Sep 2002
By A Customer
Idea Index is a book to stimulate some creative thinking in graphic design. The first half deals with graphics/icons and the second half type treatments/layout. The contents of the book are basically a huge selection of principles of visual ideas. Each one gets a page of questions and other prompts as to how it may be made to 'work' and a page of some visual examples. A plug, a lightbulb and a lightning bolt are the motifs chosen to illustrate throughout. Dont be put off by the simplicity of the approach - I found it lead me to some fine results. Real easy, flick through and tryout.

From a pure bibliophile point of view, this is a fine book too. About the height and length of a CD, but an inch or so thick. It has a durable coffemug-proof vinyl cover in an appealing bright yellow. The paper is high quality and the binding is sewn. It's a book to last and to withstand repeated use.

I knew before reading the reviews that someone would say - dont buy it, you wont learn about graphic design this way... -
Well definetly this book is NOT the way to learn about graphic design. In fact if you do so, yes, you will probably only create some truly awful clip art. Where it DOES come of use is to quickly nudge and remind designers to try out various ideas they may not have customarily thought of applying, to get to some new place with their creations.
My only criticism is some of the 'slap-on-a-filter' examples should not have been included- lose one star. However, there are only a few of these amongst hundreds of superb examples.

Recommended for fun. A steal at the price. Four Stars.

2.0 out of 5 stars ...Please dont waste your money on this book..., 27 Jul 2001
By smead3471 (london) - See all my reviews
Please dont waste your money on this book. A collection of emboss, inverse and other useless photoshop filters. Its straight out of the 80's with its typography and page layout. In short please look somewhere else for a book on graphic design .Try david carson, neville brody or designers republic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dip in and go, 8 May 2001
By A Customer
This is an extremely useful book if you are struggling for a design idea. Small and compact (pocket size) it is full of useful pointers and ideas. You can just dip into it and start the juices flowing. Full of pictures, line drawing and examples of simple design ideas it should get you thinking. You may not use the illustrated examples but it should spur you on. I have used it regulary since buying it and it now sits on my desktop.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing compared to the other design guides
In my opinion this is the weakest of the Design Guides from Jim Krause. I think it over reaches itself in its objective of guiding the reader to 'Think' Also the weakest in terms... Read more
