Product Description

Book Description

There are three elements of Muay Thai boxing: techniques, tactics and strategy. Most Muay Thai books deal only with techniques. Fighting Strategies of Muay Thai is the first book to reveal actual fighting strategies and tactics as taught in the boxing camps in Thailand. Both the author of this book, Mark Van Schuyver, and his partner in this project, Kru Pedro Villalobos, are martial artists. In fact, Villalobos is a professional Muay Thai fighter and trainer who has studied extensively in Thailand with some of the art's most well-known names. And in helping Van Schuyver with this book, Villalobos held back none of the secrets he had picked up in Thailand. Because the elements of timing and the strategies of the Muay Thai system are universal to all types of fighting, this book will be invaluable to Muay Thai fighters and trainers, professional and amateur fighters, and martial artists of all styles, including taekwon do, karate, jujitsu, judo, and no-holds-barred fighting and wrestling. The definitive work on Muay Thai strategies and tactics, Fighting Strategies of Muay Thai is a guide to total fight preparation.

About the Author

Mark Van Schuyver has practiced martial arts for many years. He is the author of more than 100 articles on the martial arts in such magazines as Black Belt, Inside King-Fu, Karate Illustrated, Fighter and Tae Kwon Do Times. He is also the coauthor of the book Secrets of Championship Karate. Kru Pedro Solana Villalobos is the owner, director and head instructor of the Thailand Arts Institute in Atlanta. He began his martial arts studies at the age of 6 with judo and then migrated to kickboxing and Thai boxing. Villalobos continues to train extensively in the boxing camps of Thailand.

5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive guide to Muay Thai, 7 Dec 2002
By Janice Dawson "msvagabond" (Scotland) - See all my reviews

Presented with the help of professional Muay Thai instructor and fighter Kru Pedro Solana Villalobos, this book is well-presented and easy to follow. The illustrations are clear and easy to understand. It covers everything from training schedules and dietery advice to techniques and historical background. A very comprehensive guide for both beginners and advanced Muay Thai enthusiasts alike. I bought it to prepare for an upcoming grading exam, but think I will be referring to it for years to come. Although it is aimed more at those wanting to be professional Muay Thai fighters, this book will please anyone with an active interest in Muay Thai.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not indispensible, 16 April 2003
By D. A. Edwards (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I didn't feel that this book offered anything in the way of insights into fighting strategies. It isn't clear to me, either, just who the book is aimed at. A beginner won't find any instructions for executing techniques, a more advanced fighter presumably already makes use of any opponents weaknesses which is basically the sum of the book. All in all, poor. If there were any other good muay thai books to choose from, I'd have awarded this just one star instead of two.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent.., 2 Sep 2007
I first read this book a couple of years ago and still refer to it for information.

I have been practicing Muay Thai for 13+ years and this has been an invaluable resource. I have trained in Thailand a number of times and I believe this book represents the thai training regime perfectly.

It has a very good weight training regime that my fighters use and benefit from.

An invaluable resource for anyone interested in Muay Thai.
