Product Description

Book Description

Paladin is pleased to present this rare reprint of a little-known hand-to-hand combat classic. At the outset of World War II, boxing heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey was appointed as a lieutenant in the U.S. Coast Guard and given the job of director of physical fitness. His orders: "Make 'em tough!" His task: to teach rookie Coast Guardsmen how to fight down and dirty in the face of the very real threat of enemy troops infiltrating American shores. Get in the ring with "the Manassa Mauler" as he gives 18 fully illustrated lessons in the art of bashing and brawling on the battlefield, including Subduing an Armed Enemy, The Unbreakable Strangle, Beating the Punch, Hammering Your Way Out of a Stranglehold, The Belt Trick, Fooling the Smart Knife Man, Turning the Tables with a Bayonet and Breaking a Standoff. All students of nasty close-quarters combat in the tradition of Sykes, Fairbairn, Applegate and other giants of the World War II era will thoroughly enjoy this fascinating piece of CQB history.

5.0 out of 5 stars goes to prove that old school really is best. Fantastic., 15 Jun 2004
i've just got this book, and having briefly looked through it, think it is absolutely fantastic. The book gets underway wihtout any delays, and straight away the moves are excelent and innovative, and deeply effective. There is a general consensus that this type of fighting methodology (the fairbank school of thinking) is the most correct form for self protection, as it is no nonsense and no frills. Just in your face effective. The great thing is is half of them (if not more i have never seen before) and they really are exciting and highly useful as well as dead easy to do and remember.

The way the book is presented is old school as well, wiht photos of well built men in underpants (these methods really have stood the test of time.) The photos are black and white but crystal clear. They clearly display the dimensions of the move in all its clarity, and there is a clear english text taking you throught the breakdown of the move. It is simple but effective and honestly teaches a lot of modern books on similar subjects how they should be presented. I have tried a lot of others and this one stands out. I cannot fualt it, and think everyone interested in propper back to basics self defense should get this book. It probably occupies top spot in my library so far. A hugely enjoyable purchase.

2.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Awful, 25 Jul 2009
By Asmodeous (North Yorkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I am a fan of Jack Dempsey - his book on Championship Fighting is one of my prized possesions and is something worth obtaining (can be downloaded from the internet apparently) but this book is a huge disappointment. It was intended as a propaganda leaflet to boost the troops in the second world war with a few 'fighting tough' techniques - but really it is quite laughable. Poor old Jack, who received such a hammering for not partaking in America's First World War efforts was no doubt emotionally/politically compelled to contribute to this piece of government literature. You only have to look at his face to see how bored and uninvolved he is!The book contains around 70 pages and has about 50 photo pages with pics similar to the cover with Jack demonstraing 'basic handling techniques' with various blokes clad in y-fronts. As a defence manual I am sorry to say most of us mastered the basic restraints and take downs 'naturally' in the playground (I evidently went to a tough school)and are of little worth for budding martial artists or indeed those about to fight on the beaches at Omaha...

Historically, it is is an interesting item to look through but as a stand alone item is sparse and rather pointless. Sorry!
