Product Description

Product Description
As society has become increasingly reliant on computers for document creation and information storage and transmittal, the amount of unauthorized theft of sensitive information stored in computers has increased correspondingly. This cutting-edge new book delivers a comprehensive treatment of the emerging field of computer forensics, making it a valuable resource for IT professionals in private businesses and government organizations, lawyers and law enforcement professionals, as well as the typical user of personal computers. It identifies the specific areas where sensitive and potentially incriminating data is hiding in personal computers, and explains how to go about truly removing this data. The book provides a systematic process for installing operating systems and application software that will help to minimize the possibility of security compromises, and numerous specific steps that need to be taken to prevent the hostile exploitation of one's computer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A treasurechest of useful information., 9 Sep 2001
By A Customer
I received my copy directly from the publisher yesterday. It is full of the kind of security information I needed: how to identify threats to my computer and how to elminate them. It is particularly useful to anyone living in a country where the government tries to know what each of us does with our PCs.

The book is very well written and easy to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Readable; candid; informative; very practical; useful., 8 Sep 2001
By A Customer
As a physician, I am very concerned about maintaining the confidentiality of my files about my patients but I don't have the time (or the inclination) to keep up with all the ins and outs about how to do that. This book gave me all the information I need in a logically organized manner that I could apply to my own computer with minimum effort. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent practical advice on maintaining privacy with a PC., 8 Sep 2001
By A Customer
I just got the book yesterday and it is an eye opener. The book basically shows what threats to life and limb any of us is up against when using a personal computer, and it is a sobering 4-5 chapters. It then shows clearly what specific steps anyone can take to mantain privacy from any and all when using a personal computer.

I was a kind of skeptical about the book's title, thinking that it was intended for the police only; it is not. If anything, police in repressive regimes will hate the helpful advice that the book provides.

My only criticism is that the book's price tag is on the high side, but it is well worth it. Book in hand, I spent a few hours implementing its recommentations on my computer right away.
