Product Description

Product Description

Dawn Dais hated running. And it didn't like her much, either. Her fitness routine consisted of avoiding the stairs in her own house, because who really has the energy to climb stairs? It was with this exercise philosophy firmly in place that she set off to complete a marathon. The Nonrunner's Marathon Guide for Women is a fun training manual for women who don't believe that running is their biological destiny but who dream of crossing the finish line nonetheless. It opens with a realistic training schedule and is chock-full of how-to's, quizzes, and funny observations, which Dais felt were lacking in the guides she had consulted. The Nonrunner's Marathon Guide for Women also integrates entries from Dias's journal, sharing everything would-be marathoners need to know about the gear, the blisters, the early morning workouts, the late-night carb binges, and - most important of all - the amazing rewards. Anyone can do a marathon. This book just makes the experience a little more bearable and a lot more fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hugely entertaining guide, 21 Jun 2007
By Michelle (Milton Keynes, UK) - See all my reviews
Even if you're not into running, you'll still appreciate the humour in this book (she may even turn you into a runner!). If you ARE into running then you'll find this extremely entertaining as well as informative. I love that it's written from the perspective of a non-addicted, non-competitive runner ... someone I can truly relate to! As someone who has yet to do her first marathon (and has no real talent for running but enjoys it anyway!), I found this book inspired me so much more than any of the other running books I've read. I read it from cover to cover in one day as I just couldn't put it down! Advice delivered with great humour is much easier to remember than boring dry facts and the author conveys her training experiences (mistakes and successes) with self-effacing wit. I'll be re-reading this book again and again!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Reluctant marathon runner!, 2 April 2009
By Egloff Roger "swissmiss" (8274 Tägerwilen Switzerland) - See all my reviews

As someone who is about to run their first marathon, this book was perfect for me. Somehow I have ended up doing a marathon, but unlike my friends who are full of enthusiasm, my motivation was very low. This book made me realise I am not the only one to feel like that and I found myself screaming out loud with laughter at so many things that I could totally relate to. If you are not a serious marathon runner, hoping to finish in under 4.30, this book is absolutely worth reading. It will make you feel much better about yourself and give you hope that you too can complete a marathon. Not much factual advice, so don't buy it if that is what you were hoping for.

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth reading, 4 Jan 2009
By G. Jenkins (Wales) - See all my reviews

Best not to read this book in public for fear of laughing/snorting out loud and making a fool of yourself. I found it a light hearted and informative book though some of the lengthy personal anecdotes were wearing. I read the whole book in a day so from a value for money point of view you may find the same information on line or in a magazine. However, the author is extremely motivating and while not gliding over the negative points of running (and there are many!) she does manage to instill the belief that it is possible to complete a marathon with enough self motivation and a supply of painkillers.
