5.0 out of 5 stars Informative About Different Home Building Technologies, 14 Mar 2007
By Jonathan D. Stubbs "JStubbs.com" (Luleå, Sweden) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The sub-title of the book is "A Common-Sense Guide to Alternative Homebuilding". That sums it up well. The book is for those who are thinking on building their own home using technologies not as common in North America. A combination of new and proven technologies and many different ways of designing/building a home.

It's also not a bad book for reference or general enjoyment.

There are 8 chapters. The first is general - "what is a house?" The next 3 are: materials, structure, temperature - an overview of parts of a house and the ways one can be designed and constructed. The next, separation, is about protection from the environment - the home lasting because it was made right for the environment. The 7th, connection, is about how a home fits within its surroundings, its environment. Chapters 8 and 9 sum things up, bring them together, promote thinking and further investigation into details.

Throughout the book are sidebars that offer interesting and informative details. The author writes from the heart - that strengthens the writing.

Anyone considering building their own place this book may be a useful place to start or for inspiration. For example, if you're retiring after 30 years in LA and plan on relocating to some place where property values are not quite so insane then this book might be a perfect buy. Your inflated dollars may make it possible for you to plan and build some nice spot off in a location you've been thinking about for years.

I've enjoyed my copy for general reading and reflecting. So far I haven't built a house using the book for guidance and inspiration. Who knows?
