The book is exactly how the sub heading suggests, it looks at town and country living side by side and expresses that although country living may be associated with all things rustic, contemporary and modern interiors can still be adapted to suit this but may not neccassarily work the same the other way round. This is done by trying to introduce the country atmosphere into a town house which seems to be so vogue at the minute using the token wicker baskets and floorboards in a london town house. The chapters are seperated into ways of thinking rather than interior themes, these include simplicity, attitude, honesty and harmony. The introduction and first chapter are about the country and issues such as expectations, mood and lifestyle and includes some pictures of the countryside. It then goes through chapters about modern living and then others opinions and then a slightly pretentious chapter called'new rustic'which is basically about the simplicity of raw materials being shown rather than covered up. The book has got some lovely images if not too many compared to the written exerts at the beginning of each chapter which may be taken slightly too seriously with chapters such as 'new rustic' and ' benign neglect' these sections may be a little difficult to plough through and I do feel that the images could have been put together in a more simplistic format, it does become a bit confusing occasionally especially with the unusual choice of chapter subjects. Although 'Country and Modern' is in my opinion a rather too serious book Dinah Hall makes some valid points about modern country living and it is interesting to read with some beautifully shot photographs.
