4.0 out of 5 stars Not for the first-time Cisco engineer, 4 Mar 2001
By Ryan O'Connell (London, UK) - See all my reviews
First things first - don't buy this book unless you're a good Network Engineer or are serious about CCIE. If you're new to networking or have just passed your CCNA, you'll be lost within the first few chapters.

Having said that, this is a good book although not as well written as the more recent Cisco offerings. (This book was originally written 2-3 years ago and has had a minimal update for the second edition although it doesn't show any signs of being dated yet) The content, from a CCIE candidates point of view, has been superceeded by the new CCNP qualification - much of the book simply reteaches things any recently-qualified CCNP should already know well such as OSPF and TCP/IP design basics and you'll find yourself getting bored and skipping pages before the end of the third chapter.

CCNPs might be better off going to Cisco's web site and reading the non-CCNP chapters of this book online (It's under Internetwork Design Guide) or printing out the PDF version and buying the TCP/IP routing book with the money instead. If you don't like reading documents on screen and can't blag works printer for a thousand pages, you should probably buy this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars In-depth guide for Advanced Readers, 7 Nov 1999
By A Customer
Not a guide for the beginner, this 2-part book is really only suitable for the more advanced Cisco engineer. That said, it provides a solid foundation of campus and wide-area network design, including some useful case studies in the second part to build on the theory given in the first part. Definitely one for the bookshelves of the serious Cisco engineer, though not one for the day-to-day IT/IS guy; stick with more general stuff such as Cisco Press's complete CCNA guide (looks fairly new & builds on the ICRC book that has been out for a while)
