Product Description

Product Description

Windows NT Shell Scripting is a comprehensive reference for network professionals. It is the only book available on the practical use of the Windows NT shell scripting language. The book begins with a high-level introduction to the shell language itself, then describes the shell commands that are useful for controlling or managing different components of a network, i.e. file management, etc. The second part of the book is a comprehensive reference of all the commands, organized by function, for easy reference by the reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Expert Author who also knows how to TEACH!, 2 Dec 2001
By A Customer
This book was a delight to read. Usually when I read a technical book its begs more questions than it answers, not this book. (although it did beg a few). As you read the book, you actually feel this author wants to teach you something - almost everything is explained clearly and in sufficient detail. There are plenty of relevant examples to demonstrate the explanations.
I was a complete beginner (to scripting) before reading this book and have found it to be a brilliant resource. The book has enough breadth and depth to teach even the more experienced scripters something.
The reference section for commands is great although (obviously) does not have the new win2000 reskit commands.
The only thing I would have really liked to have seen but didn't was a practice exercises section. As a beginner I would have found this really helpful to consolidate the knowledge.
I would recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn about shell scripting.
On the strength of this book, I have also purchased Tim Hill's 'Windows Script Host', although more difficult material, it is much more powerful and has more potential for system admin scripting.
Enjoy this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant book that does what it says on the cover !, 31 May 2001
I purchased the Windows Admin Scripting - Little Black Book because I wanted to get to get to grips with the basics of shell scripting and also to get an overview understanding of the other different types of scripting available to NT Administrators e.g KiX / WSH etc. All I can says is - I wish I'd spent my money on this one first. That is not to suggest that the Little Black Book is bad - it is just that this is a first class book and has taken me a beginner to a competent script writer. It requires a fair bit of patience but that is to be expected and I honestly don't think the subject could be explained any better than the author does here. Starts with the basics of scripting and assumes that you are at least reasonably competent on NT. I am MCSE with three years experience and I found it reasonably easy to get my head around. I don't think you need to be a complete Mekon or Tefal-head to understand this stuff and make it work. Excellent

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, 10 Oct 2002
By A Customer
This is an excellent book to get the beginner scripting using the functionality of Windows NT 4.0 and the Windows Resource kit.
Well presented, easy to understand and the scripts shown useful
Book needs updating slightly as the URL to access the sripts is no longer in use.
