A third-generation tobacco farmer, Eldridge Bagley began painting folk art of Southside Virginia in the late 1970s, creating scenes of rural farm life. This book includes over 40 of Bagley's paintings with comments by the artist about each one.

From the Author
Visions of a Virginia on the wane
Eldridge Bagley grew up a tobacco farmer. Only in his late twenties did he pick up a paintbrush and begin to create his landscapes and still lifes, evocative remembrances of a life close to the land in his own southside Virginia. Although his art might be called primitive, there is always a twist that shows his intelligence and awareness of the future encroaching on Virginia's past: a bulldozer, a superhighway, McDonald's arches in the distance, suggesting that the tobacco-farming times that he remembers from his youth are on the wane. If you have any sentimental attachments to Virginia or the rural south, you will enjoy this book. Although I wrote the text, our plan was to use Eldridge's own words and memories, to tell the stories he wants to tell to accompany his beautiful paintings.
