I just took my first "C" class this semester, and when I looked at our textbook written by Foster, at first glance it looked good. However, for the beginner programmer this book is NOT for you! Yes, it comes with a floppy with sample code. It helps with the first 2 or 3 chapters, but after that Foster gets to theoretical and technical in his explanations. His C++ Preview is a joke. For the beginner I suggest books meant for the layman. Especially, "C by Example", by Greg Perry Que Publishers, and Greg's other book " Programming C in 12 Easy Lessons", Sams Publishing. Of course the " C for Dummies" is a big help also. Perry excels at teaching the beginner by making the concepts of functions, passing values and addresses, static variables etc much easier to understand. I own all the books above and like Greg Perry's the best.

The real title of the book is C by Discovery 2nd Edition.

I bought this book because I liked the first edition of C by Discovery and I was waiting for the same author to come out with a similar book on C++. I was sorely disappointed that the author L.S. Foster has not added C++ to this book. She writes in the preface that she did not include C++ because she could not do justice to this "different language and programming paradigm" with a brief coverage of C++. She adds that attempting to cover both C and C++ in one book would result in: "Instead of continuing to do one thing well, C by Discovery would be attempting to do two things poorly." I understand her reasoning.

Apparently, the publisher Scott/Jones Inc. and Amazon books colluded to sell extra copies of this book by listing it under the title C by Discovery with C++. This is not the title of the book that was sent to me. In the upper left corner of the cover is the claim "Includes NEW Coverage of C++". The book is wrapped in shrink-wrap and can not be returned after the shrink-wrap is removed. After I opened the shrink-wrap I discovered that the C++ section of the book consists of a "Preview of C++" in a 35 page appendix at the end of the book. It is an abridgement without exercises of the book QuickStart in C++ by William B. Jones.

C by Discovery is still an excellent book for learning C and I recommend it to all who wish to learn C.
