A must for any facilitator, 11 Sep 2002
Weaver and Farrell describe, near the back of the book, the most common problems experienced when working with groups and how to fix them when they happen. If it only contained this information it would be worth the price of a one-day training course on facilitation alone. But it contains so much more. The most common tools to use in facilitation, and how to use them. How to structure a meeting/facilitation session, dealing with conflict, different styles that groups adopt and how to deal with them, and more besides. It contains a vast amount of information, yet it's well laid out, easy to digest, practical, and most importantly, highly relevant. The experience of the authors is clearly displayed - they have identified which approaches work, then distilled them into a coherent structure and presented them lucidly. You could learn this stuff by making mistakes for years, or you could buy this book and be ahead of the game. Anyone working as a facilitator, anyone working as a manager, any presenter or trainer should own this book. If you're a consultant, thank the authors for making your life easier, and buy, read and put in action the ideas in this book. This is so far ahead of any other book on on facilitation I can't imagine anyone writing a better one. Stunning.
