Product Description

Product Description
Presenting an easy-to-understand model of facilitation that focuses on getting work done, this text provides practical guidance for managers and leaders who need to be successful in this new role. The authors show managers how to use themselves in new ways, and capitalize on group dynamics.

From the Author
This book is both comprehensive and practical.
We invested four years of our professional career in developing this book. It contrasts the roles of leader, manager and facilitator; offers a model which describes the role of facilitator; outlines guidelines for practical application of that role in work settings; presents a new way of conceiving of the role of facilitator as boundary management; and describes the role of facilitator in helping organizations create the kinds of changes they want. It is also easy to use. We hope you find it useful!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for any facilitator, 11 Sep 2002
By A. Richards (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Weaver and Farrell describe, near the back of the book, the most common problems experienced when working with groups and how to fix them when they happen. If it only contained this information it would be worth the price of a one-day training course on facilitation alone.

But it contains so much more. The most common tools to use in facilitation, and how to use them. How to structure a meeting/facilitation session, dealing with conflict, different styles that groups adopt and how to deal with them, and more besides.

It contains a vast amount of information, yet it's well laid out, easy to digest, practical, and most importantly, highly relevant. The experience of the authors is clearly displayed - they have identified which approaches work, then distilled them into a coherent structure and presented them lucidly.

You could learn this stuff by making mistakes for years, or you could buy this book and be ahead of the game.

Anyone working as a facilitator, anyone working as a manager, any presenter or trainer should own this book. If you're a consultant, thank the authors for making your life easier, and buy, read and put in action the ideas in this book.

This is so far ahead of any other book on on facilitation I can't imagine anyone writing a better one. Stunning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent practical guide to the art of facilitating, 26 Nov 1997
By A Customer
This book is an excellent practical guide for assisting managers in accomplishing work through their people. As the manager's role becomes more of a facilitative one, this book can help individuals learn useful skills they can pull off the pages and put immediately into practice. The abundant tables and figures clearly illustrate the principles. The Quick Fix guide at the end of the book offers pragmatic solutions to common problems at work. I recommend this book to all my clients!! Dennis S. Reina, Ph.D. Principal, Chagnon & Reina Associates, Inc. Organizational Development Consultants dsreina@pwshift.com
