5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant, 30 April 2003
This review is from: Can't Buy Me Love (Hardcover)
I started this book whilst on holiday and had finished it in 3 days. It touched my heart and is a truly magnificent piece of work by Chris Kenry.

There are times in the book that made me laugh and times when I wanted to cry. It is a rollercoaster ride of good times and bad times.

The story itself is filled with intelligent and uncompromising reality. A great book that is really hard to put down.

I guarantee that you will love it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't judge this book by its cover., 23 May 2003

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Can't Buy Me Love (Paperback)
There's a worrying trend in gay fiction to go for the really fluffy; books filled with vapid "perfect" guys with impeccable bodies who are masters of the Scene, and the twin crises they face concerns the perfect boyfriend and the perfect outfit to go with it. Call it the Bridget Jonesing of gay fiction. This book was marketed that way, with a photo of two attractive guys on the cover and "fun" fonts and the back cover text about how "they're falling for each other" and ooh what will happen? I wonder.
I actually really liked this book, and it rises above that genre. Kenry is a good writer who has an easy style and a clever wit. This is not a novel that will change the way you live, but it's not totally without depth. The main character Jack starts out fitting the vapid/flawless physique/perfect outfit mode, and does transform himself during the course of the novel, there's growth and self-discovery. Jack is quite well-drawn, and many of the supporting cast are believably real people as well. It's not just disposable beach reading, I enjoyed this immensely and will certainly look for more good things from Kenry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Read, 26 Aug 2003
This review is from: Can't Buy Me Love (Paperback)
What a lousy cover! But what a FABULOUS book! I laughed out loud, suffered with the characters and generally got so wrapped around the story I actually missed my bus stop because I was reading the book on my way home from work.

I would very much like to see a sequel to this book, as I fell in love with the main characters. It would be a treat to read a new adventure from Kenry's boys beginning where this book left off.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly funny!
I admit it. I'm very shallow. I picked this book up because the blond guy on the cover is so very very cute. (Who says sex doesn't sell??). Read more
