This book provides an excellent introduction not only to Java but also OOP in general. Having been immersed in Visual Basic and 'old fashioned' procedural languages for many years I had no experience of Object Oriented Programming and really needed to grasp the key concepts. I would agree that as you become more experienced in Java, or if you are already a Java developer you will need a more advanced text but I think that many OOP and Java novices will value the time the writers have spent covering the basics. Start with this book and then move on to a more advanced text later.

The book is well written and laid out with plenty of examples to build on the knowledge gained. An excellent choice for beginners, however advance Java programmers should look elsewhere.

Like the other "...in 21 days" books, this is good for beginners that want to walk through the basics. It is not an all-emcompassing reference, nor is it all that you need to write Java applications, but it is a good start.
