Consistent with the "Unleashed" series of books "Java Unleashed" contains a vast amount of material on its chosen subject. Definitely not a book for the beginner but ideal for college students or the serious Java programmer. It is basically a collection of papers on the total Java environment encompassing the basics concepts of the language through to a description of the Java "Virtual Machine". You will not have to spend hours downloading software from Sun Microsystems - the complete JDK package is on the accompanying disk. Not only do you get numerous ready made applets to accomplish the sort of clever tricks we are used to from the usual sources on the Internet, but you also get the source code. The CD also provides you with two other books, one on intranet programming and the other on Java applications. I would recommend this book to computer science students for its excellcent coverage on object design and programming theory. The sections on concurrency and multithreading will be of interest to UNIX programmers and anyone involved in parallel programming systems.
