I am also glad that I borrowed this book from the library instead of paying for it. The book has 1500+ pages of mostly fluff. It tries to do everying but doesn't do any one of them well. The old wise saying is true. If it sounds too good to be true it usually is.

Tons of boring books on HTML but Web Publishing Unleashed Professional is NOT one of them. The writing is fun, easy to read and clear. Only a terrific author like Mr. Stanek can take difficult subjects and make them easy to follow and interesting. In my opinion here are the top reasons to buy this book:

1) Comprehensive coverage of the basics. Emphasis on design is definitely a treat.

2) Top-notch coverage of advanced page layout and design. Discusses the topic intelligently while providing great insights, examples and ideas you can use at your own Web site.

3) Chock full of tips, advice and discussion on graphics and multimedia. These tips are worth the price of the book alone!

4) Awesome chapters on CGI, VBScript, ActiveX, HTML tables, Netscape Frames and Cascading Stylesheets.

If I could give this book a lower rating than one star, I would. I made the mistake of following the reviews on this page, so I'd like to set the record straight. To call this book a professional reference is a joke, it is padded out with chapters on using such 'professional' software as Netscape Navigator Gold and Microsoft Internet Assistants. The first and last time I opened this book was on the day it arrived 6mths ago. Any worthwhile content is surrounded by junk and makes the book completely unwieldy. If you know nothing about web publishing, you may gain an education from this book but before you finish it you too will be looking for something lighter to lift but heavier on serious content! I can't get rid of this book soon enough. Buy the HTML Sourcebook (Graham) instead - but you serious developers already know to do that anyway....
