Product Description

Review
"General Kinney's firsthand account of his unique experiences in World War II is guaranteed to keep the reader on the edge of the chair. From the heroic defense of Wake Island to the horrible years as a prisoner of the Japanese and the spine-tingling account of his escape that was three years in the making, Kinney provides new insights and perspectives into the war in the Pacific." --Brig. Gen. Philip D. Caine, USAF (Ret.), author of SPITFIRES, THUNDERBOLTS, AND WARM BEER: AN AMERICAN FIGHTER PILOT OVER EUROPE

Synopsis
Within hours of the attack on Pearl Harbour, the Japanese struck the small U.S. garrison on Wake Island. As his squadron's engineering officer, Marine pilot John F. Kinney used all his ingenuity to oversee the repair of damaged planes when he was not in the air fighting the Japanese. His gallant efforts helped the defenders hold out for an incredible two weeks. Kinney's remarkable story includes his escape from a Japanese POW camp in China and his service during the Korean War.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT JAPANESE POW & ESCAPE READING, 5 Oct 1998
By A Customer
This book starts out slow moving, almost to the extent you want to skip the first couple of chapters since he talks about his boyhood and other events that are important to his life before the "main event" which is defending Wake Island from the Japanese. However, it is an autobriography, so stick with it. The account really picks up during the defense of Wake Island, his capture by the Japanese, and eventually his escape in China, all of which is fascinating can't-put-the-book-down sort of stuff. Kinney, the author, presents a very clear and exciting picture of what happened. All the questions you wanted to know about Japanese POW's - at least in this instance - and how you would escape in wartorn China, are answered. I recommend the book, but do read the first few chapters since they provide a setting for the era and military preparedness in the U.S. as it existed back then..
